Since I first designed a wordpress site, I realized I should have a name for my blog, as it is pretty standard internet practice. But nothing in particular came to me. Until now. And it’s the title of this piece. The title of my blog will now be “I should Name This Blog”. It’s succinct, tells you what it is, and is just enough wordplay without getting dense. Plus, it’s a nod to one of my longstanding shortcomings as an author. I’ve never been great at naming things.

Not just characters, but places, and things as well. It’s why I research name meanings and origins so much, because they don’t tend to just come to me. Nine times out of ten if I go to someone in my life for help with a writing decision, it has to do with naming something or someone. And the deciding factor that made The Other Option the first novel idea I actually started writing in earnest, was that I already knew an early version of the first sentence, as wellas Mark, Erin, Sophia, and Paul’s names. They’re in the original notes I handwrote the morning I woke up from the dream that inspired my debut dystopia novel. Since I rarely had an easy time coming up with these components, it felt like a sign and gave me momentum, finishing a first rough draft of the first chapter the same day. It was written by hand in my Other Option Notebook which is now in my archives with other undigitized hand-written notes.

So, here it is, inspired by whatever thoughts don’t fluidly incorporate themselves in my current works in progress.  Most posts will come out on Mondays, solely because I like the Alliteration of Mary’s Monday Musings. I’ll definitely say things and have ideas others have expressed before. I believe important things bear repeating.

If you have any suggestions or requests for topics you’d like to hear my thoughts and opinions on, or if you have a question for me or any of my characters, email [email protected].

Love and luck to all my readers and here’s hoping we all make it through the summer on this rapidly warming planet.
